Termite Control

According to the US Department of Agriculture, each year termites cost consumers more than $2 billion for controlling termites and repairing termite damage. Termites thrive in warm, damp conditions. Florida’s climate is ideal for them. The two types of termites that can cause significant structural damage found in Florida are drywood termites and subterranean termites. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services recommends that Florida residents have termite protection.

The Difference Between Drywood & Subterranean Termites

Characteristics Drywood Termites Subterranean Termites
Colony location Inside wood in structure In ground travel through mud tubes to feed on structure (wood)
Signs of infestation Wood pellets that look like grains of rice outside the damaged area May not see damage until severe. Inside damage has mud like substance
Speed of Damage Slow. Takes years to do major damage Fast. Can do significant structural damage quickly
Treatment of Active Termites Spot treatment or Tent Fumigation Liquid or bait soil treatments around the perimeter of structure
Preventive Treatments Limited: Borate treatments can prevent infestation to unpainted wood but cannot guarantee infestations will not occur in untreatable areas of structure. (behind walls) Yes. The same treatments that can cure infestation can be done to prevent subterranean termites

Homeowner Prevention

There are things you can do to lessen the chances of termites in your home or business:

  • Fix roof or plumbing leaks.
  • Eliminate all wood-to-soil contact around the foundation
  • Keep firewood or other wood debris from being stacked against the side of the home.
  • Keep mulch or soil away from the home’s siding. It’s best to have a barrier of a few inches.
  • Remove items like scrap lumber, boxes and even old books or newspapers from crawl spaces.
  • Maintain adequate ventilation in crawl spaces.
  • Prevent moisture accumulation around your home’s foundation by making sure water is diverted with downspouts and gutters.
  • Remove old tree stumps and roots close to the building.
  • Get preventive termite treatments from NaturZone

NaturZone Termite Services

  • Total Termite Treatment Protection Plan: For one low fee you can have both drywood and subterranean termite treatments covered should these pest infest you property. This will kill existing termite infestations and prevent future infestations to the treated areas.( Normally attic and crawl spaces.)
  • Subterranean termite prevention and curative treatments: We provide both liquid and termite baiting services.
  • Drywood termite tent-less spot treatment: When drywood termite infestation is limited, we can provide a spot treatment with a guarantee of re-treatment should the termites reappear.
  • Drywood termite fumigation referral program: Sometimes environmental factors such as type of construction combined with extent of drywood termite infestation require tent fumigation to eliminate hidden termite colonies¬† that spot treatment will not cure.
